It is an aggressive-looking stunner. It’s not exactly set up for long-distance comfort. Throwing a leg over the 1290, the stance complements the looks. This is no upright adventure sports bike like say the Multistrada or BMW S1000XR let alone a comfy laid back GT tourer but a machine firmly in the sports touring mould.
And the adventure-bike S1000XR isn’t really doing the same thing as a sports-tourer KTM 1290 Super Duke GT either. Its height and suspension travel mean it’s not as engaging or capable inThis is the only all-new machine in our four-bike test. The Super Adventure got a thorough make-over for this year (or rather, 2021, but we didn’t get it Stateside until this year), with a new, lighter chassis that’s got the steering head mounted 15mm closer to the rider and the swingarm now 15mm longer.
Despite sporting a slimmer tank, bodywork and lower seat, the 2021 1290 Super Adventure S, which costs £14,999, looks broadly similar to the version it supersedes, even though it is 90% new. In saying that, it’s more of a refinement than anything radically alternative, something underlined during my day-long, 200-mile UK ride.
